un-fatPaulie Update #6 (not so Weekly)

Posted by Paulie at 2:43 PM on June 29, 2006.

The slack continues. Haven't updated in a while, been too busy working and playing WoW and walking.

Food:
Went completely off the rails for a bit, and now I'm back on. Moderation is the key for the long term, or so I keep reminding myself. Sensible meals, lots of salads, and light light suppers seem to be the key.

Exercise:
I've added lunch-time walks, where Chris and I go and eat at the river and get 2 miles in each day. This rocks. It also makes my post-work 3 miles easier to do.

Results:

Previous Weight: 350
New Weight: 345

Total loss since first weigh-in: 25 pounds

So it's slowing down - about 2 pounds a week. Probably because it's summer and I've been eating BBQ and drinking beer. Need to cut that down a bit and be more dedicated. Of course, I can't let life pass me by. I'm well on-track towards my goal, and will keep at it.

I'll try to be less slack, and more diligent in my updates - keep on me if I don't.

Go See Superman Returns!

Posted by Paulie at 8:28 AM on June 28, 2006.

I don't care what it takes, you must go and see this film. This is not a good superhero film, it's way more than that. This is, without a doubt, my pick for best movie of the year. Superman Returns is an ASTOUNDING film.

Now, take my words with a grain of salt. I was 4 when Superman came out in 1978, and I've probably seen Superman and Superman II about 20 times each over the last 28 years, usually with my brother Dave, who was as excited about this movie as anything I've ever seen him excited about in his life.

I know that every other website and major news source is reviewing the film, and my take probably isn't any different - I just want to make sure whoever comes here sees this and says "Yeah, I'll go to that!".

Let's talk about the man in the cape. Brandon Routh *IS* Superman. I've only had Christopher Reeve as Superman for my whole life - he's what popped into my brain whenever I thought of the blue-tighted hero. No more. Brandon Routh owns this character now. It may be a shame too, as like Chris Reeve it may be tough for him to break out and be something else. I'm hoping he gets a major role in the World of Warcraft movie, but we'll see what time brings.

Routh's Superman is everything a superhero can be, and while (as the film hammers in) an alien, this guy really has some human pathos in his eyes. That's what really grabbed me. Chris Reeve was a GREAT Clark Kent, and a fantastic Superman, but Mr. Routh gives Supes a depth I'd never though possible in a comic character, and he does it all without saying too much. I think combined kudos goes to Routh and the director, Bryan Singer, for capturing a nuanced performance in a big summer blockbuster film.

I really had doubts about Kate Bosworth as Lois Lane. I'd only seen her in a coupla films, notably Blue Crush, and always as a blonde. I really didn't think she had much more than a hot bod and a pretty face. In the words of Lex Luthor, "WRONG!" Ms. Bosworth blew me away. I could feel her pain and her conflict when it came to Superman, saw the conviction when she wanted the non-Superman story as a reporter, and loved the way she was with her fiance and son. Again, when I think Lois Lane, I'm thinking Bosworth now.

Lex Luthor. Okay, I already love Spacey in everything he does that he's not singing or dancing in. Yes, I know the man loves his singing and dancing, but he's best when he plays a little off-kilter. Here, he brings a bit of his psychopathic side out from his role in Se7en, and throws in a tiny bit of that song-and-dance-man comedy. Singer could not have chosen a better Lex Luthor. That's all that needs to be said. Kaiser Soze is Lex Luthor!

The nitty gritty - the movie is 157 minutes (just over 2 1/2 hours) long, and feels maybe about 2 hours long. It ends, you want more. The first 30 minutes or so is a bit slow for those of us who know the Superman character, but the slow build REALLY pays off.

I couldn't recommend a film more. In fact, Warner Brothers could've gone with "You'll believe a man can fly AGAIN!" as a tag line, and I'd still be there.

This is the only movie in YEARS that's made me want to pay to go back and see it in the theatre a second time. Send me an email, and I'll join you when you're going.

I am a little worried about him at the moment. He hasn't been feeling well ... and his eyes are very teary. Poor Levi. Feel better soon buddy!

un-fatPaulie Weekly Update #5

Posted by Paulie at 12:22 PM on June 7, 2006.

Gah, I'm a slacker in all ways and shapes. Maybe it's the rain and then the sun and then the rain that throws me off balance. Oh well..

Let's have back at it, shall we?

Food:
When it rains, I stay in and snack. This is bad. I must get a poncho and get out into the rain. Aside from that, I've discovered (Thanks Amanda!) these little Thinsation things. 100 calories, tastes like Oreos. I get one as my morning snack! Lots of salads, lots of chicken, and whatever's for supper in small portions.

I still think I should be more hardcore about my diet.

Exercise:
Lots of walking about during the days (2nd floor to 4th floor to 1st floor) seemed to add up, and I have decent results for the week. Still haven't hit my magic target yet.

Results:

Total Steps: 47,000
Goal: 70,000

Previous Weight: 353
New Weight: 350

Total loss since first weigh-in: 20 pounds

Woot, 20 pounds, an inch off my waist, and life is good. 2 months till the big camping trip, and 2 1/2 months till Wilson's wedding. I wonder how I'll do.

Dr. Seuss's Lord of the Rings

Posted by Paulie at 2:44 PM on June 1, 2006.

"Gandalf, Gandalf! Take the ring!
I am too small to carry this thing!"

"I can not, will not hold the One.
You have a slim chance, but I have none.
I will not take it on a boat,
I will not take it across a moat.
I cannot take it under Moria,
that's one thing I can't do for ya.
I would not bring it into Mordor,
I would not make it to the border."

This was found by Chris (aka he who never posts) and sent to me earlier today. The thread is almost 4 years old, but absolutely completely brilliant, if you're a literary nerd. I'm only partially so, and thus post the Seussian rhymes above as it's the one I most understood.

Go forth and enjoy!

un-fatPaulie Weekly Update #4

Posted by Paulie at 2:42 PM on June 1, 2006.

Short and sweet because it's days late.

Food:
Ate well and poorly - Had pizza, had beer, had fun. Lots of salads, no real pop, no chocolate.

Exercise:
Lousy rainy weather totally flummoxed me for the week. A man in a coma could've had more exercise than I did.

Results:

Total Steps: Somewhere around 30,000
Goal: 70,000

Previous Weight: 356
New Weight: 353

Total loss since first weigh-in: 17 pounds

This week's going better now that the sun's come out, and I'll just have to forge ahead.
