Hannibal Rising: The Saskatoon Connection!Posted by Sarah at

If you didn’t believe before that the Universe is uniquely connected to Saskatoon or at least Saskatchewan, believe it now. The latest evidence was found in the newest chapter of the Hannibal Lecter series and Hollywood blockbuster, Hannibal Rising. Not only did this movie aim to educate viewers about the history of Hannibal becoming a cannibal and developing his savory appetite for human cheek-kabobs, it showed us a Hannibal growing up in his country of Lithuania. Young (and relatively un-evil) Hannibal survives the horrors of WWII… almost, but I won’t say another word or I will spoil the plot! Hannibal escapes to France to start his venture into evil geniusnousness and lives with Lady Murasaki Shikibu, his aunt-in-law. The memories of his childhood war experience continue to haunt Hannibal during his medical school years in France and he becomes obsessed with finding the predators that forever made him into the monster he is today. Now for the Saskatoon/SK connection (and still without giving too much away)… one of the men that Hannibal is seeking lives in Canada. While torturing another target on his hit list, Hannibal managed to threaten out the location of the man’s accomplice. To which the man replies “he lives in a small village… near SASKATOON” <this is where the theatre outbursts in laughter and disbelief, as probably did not happen in non-Saskatchewan-based theatres>. At the end of the movie, it shows Hannibal driving into the “Hamlet of Melville” which may or may not be historically accurate (not sure if Melville was a Hamlet in the 1950’s). However, they did indeed portray Saskatchewan’s roads quite historically accurate as his car rumbles over bumpy, narrow and shoulder-less pavement. Cool, eh? I was born in Melville in 1974. I've seen pictures of the city/town all the way back to mid 40's. It was already a town by then and no way a hamlet. The pictures are from the movie are not even close.
